Mathew Thompson Nets Hat Trick as @ACBulldogHockey Bulldozes Past Lake Forest, 8-3

Box Score

ADRIAN, Mich.--Sophomore alternate captain Mathew Thompson scored two of his three goals in a decisive second period to lead the nationally No. 2-ranked Adrian College men's hockey team to an 8-3 victory Saturday over visiting Lake Forest College at Arrington Ice Arena.

The Bulldogs ran the nation's longest unbeaten streak--including all NCAA divisions on the men's side--to 15 games to improve to 14-1-1 on the season and 10-1-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association South Division. The Foresters slip to 6-9 overall and 4-8 in the league.

Thompson added an assist for a four-point afternoon, tying a season high. Junior Austin Hervey added a goal and two helpers to go along with a plus-4 rating.

Sophomore Dillon Kelley made his second career start in the Adrian net, making 25 saves for a personal record.

Jack Lewis paced the Lake Forest offense with two goals and an assist on three shots.

Thompson broke a scoreless tie with just 7 seconds remaining in the first period, with assists credited to sophomore Taylor McCloy and freshman Cory Dunn.

Lake Forest countered with an early goal in the second stanza as Robert Wiener scored his third goal of the season just 16 seconds in. Billy Kent and Lewis had the assists.

The 1-all tie was shortlived, however, as senior Pat George gave Adrian a 2-1 lead at the 2:27 mark--his second goal of the season. Then just 26 seconds later, sophomore Kyle Brothers made it 3-1 to continue what would become four unanswered goals to put the Bulldogs up 6-2 after two periods. Thompson scored twice and freshman Trevor Boyd also found the back of the net during Adrian's five-goal outburst in the period.

Both teams scored two power play tallies with Lake Forest having eight chances and Adrian, four. The Bulldogs went 4-for-9 with the man-advantage this weekend, pushing their efficiency to 26.3 percent for ninth in NCAA Division III.

Adrian returns to the ice next weekend for a NCHA showdown at top-ranked and North Division leader St. Norbert in De Pere, Wis. The series faces off at 8 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday (both times Eastern).
