FREMONT, Neb.--Adrian College's Brad Kobryn scored four goals on Friday night to lead the nationally-ranked Bulldogs over the home-standing Midland Warriors 10-1. The Bulldogs, who have traveled here to the Cornhusker State, for a season-opening two-game series, took command early in game one, outscoring the Warriors 3-0 in the first period.
Adrian is ranked 10th in this week's American Collegiate Hockey Association Division I men's hockey poll. The Bulldogs and Warriors will conclude their two-game set on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. Eastern, and there will be live video courtesy of Midland Athletics.
Kobryn scored goals one and three in the period, while Justin Fisher added the middle goal for the Bulldogs. Chris Derochie scored the opening goal of the second period, before Kobryn completed the hat trick to make it 5-0 Adrian with a little under 12 minutes to go in period number two.
Midland's Ben Henry broke the Bulldogs scoring run, tallying the Warriors lone goal with 10:42 remaining in the second period. But Adrian continued to pour it on with three more second-period goals as Mark Fratercangeli and Michael Trater each scored their first goals of the season, sandwiched around Kobryn's fourth of the night making the score 8-1 at the end of two periods.
The third period belonged to Adrian's Marcus Rose, who scored the only two goals of the period just 2:03 apart to make the final score 10-1.
Adrian goaltender Matt's Schnoes made 17 saves to earn his first win of the season, as the Bulldogs outshot Midland 35-18 in the contest. Beleaguered Midland net minder Sean Kelly went most of the way in goal, making 17 saves while allowing eight goals. The Bulldogs scored two more goals against Erikur Arnason, who stopped eight Bulldog shots in all.
Adrian's JP Grineau and Chris Derochie each had three assists for the Bulldogs, while Ted Anstett added two more, and Adrian got single helpers from CJ Nicholson, Rainier Glimple, Matt Schwehr, Sam Johnston, Marcel Kottek, Fratercangeli and Kobryn.
The win was the first for Adrian's new head coach Gary Astalos behind at the Bulldog bench.
The Bulldogs will return home to Arrington Ice Arena next Friday night to begin a two-game series with No. 3-ranked Stony Brook.
