Bulldogs' Offense Comes Alive Against Saints

Box Score

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College women's lacrosse team's offense came to life in the Bulldogs' 19-7 win over Aquinas on Wednesday, March 6. The win puts AC already level with the number of wins last year's squad picked up, putting this season poised for improvement.

THE BASICS

Final Score: Adrian 19, Aquinas 7

Location: Adrian, Mich. (Kapnick Field at Docking Stadium)

Records: AC 2-1, AQ 0-2

HOW IT HAPPENED

Adrian scored 39 seconds in and then twice more in the game's first five minutes and didn't look back. Just under six minutes in, freshman Cristin Culbertson took the ball up the field from her own side of midfield and put a spin move on the final Aquinas defender to get her on goal for the game's marque goal. Sophomore Gwyneth Carlson scored a man down and finished the half with two goals, as did junior Maddie Nicholas. AC was up 6-2 with 10 minutes remaining but the Saints got two back, cutting Adrian's lead to 6-4 at the break.

The Bulldogs opened up the second half red hot, scoring five of the half's first six goals, and then going on an 8-1 run to end the game after Aquinas scored with 22:08 remaining. Carlson had a monster half, scoring five goals after the break, twice from the free position while a man up. The Black and Gold had no problems holding on to their lead for the entire game, winning 19-7 when the final buzzer sounded. Adrian now only needs one more win to surpass the two wins last year's team managed.

TOP DOGS

• Carlson led the team with seven goals, followed by senior Annie Rice with four, and Nicholas and Culbertson with three and two, respectively.

• Rice tacked on five assists with her four goals, for a game-high nine points.

• Carlson had six ground balls to lead the team while Rice led the Bulldogs with eight draw controls.

• Senior Hannah Emerson and freshman Sydney Doroh split time in net, combining for four saves.

THE OPPOSITION

• Megan Pyrett had four of Aquinas's seven goals.

• Lauren Sanford scored twice and added two assists before picking up her second yellow card seven minutes into the second half.

• McKenna Maltby made eight saves in the loss.

QUOTABLE

• "This was a really nice bounce-back win for our team after a tough one-goal loss on Monday. The girls really responded and got the energy level up to start the second half, and Gwyn Carlson was a catalyst for us both with her play on the field and with the energy she brings." - Head Coach Brett Asher

• "We still have a couple areas to clean up, and we need to work on stringing a full 60 minutes together without having a little drop off, but I am very proud of how well our young teams has come together already. We have a lot of positive things and contributions from up and down the roster to build on right now." - Asher

UP NEXT

The Bulldogs take a week off before hosting Hiram on Tuesday, March 19 at 7 p.m. Following the game against Hiram, Adrian is on the road for two games, including at Alma on Wednesday, March 27 to start conference play.
