UTICA, N.Y. -- The Adrian College men's hockey team opened its season on the road with the Pioneers of Utica College. The Bulldogs could not hold on to the early lead as they lose in overtime 3-2 to Utica.
Adrian struck first on a goal from
Chase Spencer eleven minutes into the opening period. Bulldogs newcomers
Hunter Wendt and
Ty Enns recorded assists for Adrian. In the second period, the Bulldogs doubled their lead on a goal from
Mathew Rehding to make the score 2-0.
Dawson Ellis and
Zach Goberis picked up an assist on the Rehding goal.
Utica went on to respond put themselves on the board with a goal with under two minutes to play in the second period. Almost halfway through the third, Utica struck again to tie that game at 2-2. The final 12:30 went silent and forcing an overtime 3-on-3 battle.
Saturday's game marks the third consecutive game between Adrian and Utica that resulted in overtime.
Utica controlled the puck for the first minute and a half of overtime before Adrian took control. The Bulldogs missed some passes wide and the Pioneers took advantage. Utica found themselves ahead of the Adrian defense and found a scoring opportunity which resulted in the winning goal for Utica.Â
Nic Tallarico got the start for Adrian in goal facing 30 shots on goal and making 27 saves in 63 minutes.
Saturday's game also marked the fourth straight game between Adrian and Utica that was determined by one goal.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Sunday, October 31 as they get set for game two of the series against the Pioneers. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
