ADRIAN, Mich. - On Tuesday evening, the Adrian women's volleyball team returned to the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center fresh off the season's first straight-set victory on Saturday. The Bulldogs carried that momentum from start to finish against the visiting Hornets of Kalamazoo, sweeping their MIAA-foe 3-0.
"We're a team that's building," noted head coach
David Kwan postgame. "We set some defensive goals for ourselves because that's what we've needed to work on, and I think we had a great game defensively."
Adrian held Kalamazoo to a .072 attack percentage while turning in a .225 mark of their own.
The visitors gained the initial advantage in the game's first set, opening a 4-1 lead behind a series of Bulldog errors. The hosts found their footing soon after, however, dropping a 6-0 run, sparked by a
Mallory Dorow kill to move ahead 10-6.
The energy produced by the 'Dogs' run churned into a 13-2 stretch by the home team, creating an unassailable lead that would take Adrian to its fourth consecutive set win, 25-17.
In the second set, the black and gold, again, had to fight from behind, trailing by as many as four points in the early stages of the frame.
After falling into a 14-11 hole, a timeout by the locals ultimately ignited a 5-2 response to draw level at 16-16. The Bulldogs' work did not stop there, as they proceeded to score 10 of the set's last 12 points to claim a two-sets to none lead, 25-19.
The night's final set appeared to be all Adrian's from the get-go. Behind the stellar serving of
Hailey Farrell and
Lana Cox, the Bulldogs charged in front 10-4, and were looking to make quick work of the Hornets.
The road team had other plans, nevertheless, crawling back from as many as nine points down to push the match to the brink of moving to a fourth set. In fact, Kalamazoo would fend off four match-points before an assertive kill by
Destiny Johnson sealed the deal at 25-23.
"In those situations, we just try to focus on process," noted Kwan on Kalamazoo's late push. "We wanted to get the ball back to our setter, and I think that Hailey (Farrell) did that best that she could down the stretch to try and stick to that process."
Dorow finished the evening with a game-high 12 kills, followed by Johnson with nine.
Farrell racked up a game-best 30 assists to go along with two service aces, and
Mya Minjares paced Adrian with 12 digs.
The Bulldogs (6-12, 2-2 MIAA) get some time off before traveling for their next match at Hope on October 13.
