Strong Effort Defensively Leads Women's Soccer Past Saint Mary's

ADRIAN, Mich. - On Wednesday evening, the Adrian women's soccer team set a new season-high for consecutive wins, silencing the visiting Belles of Saint Mary's 2-0 for their third straight victory.

Adrian (8-5, 3-0 MIAA) did not need much time to generate its first opportunity.

Right off the opening kick-off, the ball was driven deep into the Bulldogs' attacking zone. A funky bounce wound up ricocheting off the arm of a Belles' defender, garnering a free kick for the home side less than 20 seconds into the contest.

Senior, McKenna Mahoney set up shop from roughly 25 yards out and delivered a dazzling strike off the goalkeeper's hands and into the side of the net just. The first-minute goal was Mahoney's team-leading 11th of the season and 30th of her career.

Then, in the 23rd minute, the Trenton, Michigan native, again, found herself on one end of an Adrian goal. This time, Mahoney claimed possession of the ball near the outside edge of the penalty box before crossing a pass to the opposite side of the area to Kaitlyn Dake. Despite the initial pass running into traffic caused by the Saint Mary's backline, Dake skillfully won the ball and sent a laser past the outstretched hands of the visitor's netminder.

From there, defense became the name of the game, and while both sides would see a chance here and there, neither could tally anything further.

All told, the black and gold's defense limited the Belles to five shots, including just one in the second half. Adrian, on the other hand, produced 14 total shots, nine of which were on goal.

Mahoney and Dake paced the locals offensively with 6 and 4 shots, respectively.

The 'Dogs continue conference play this coming Saturday at Olivet High School against the Comets of Olivet College. The weekend's bout is slated for a 12 p.m. start time.
