FOND du LAC, WI. - At the Blue Line Family Ice Center, the Adrian men's hockey team held off a third-period rally by homestanding Marian to come away with a 5-3 victory and wrap up a weekend sweep of the Sabres.
At the end of the day, it was a four-goal second period that proved to be the difference maker for the visitors.
After entering the middle period knotted at 1-1, the Bulldogs took over the lead just three minutes in on a goal scored by
Matus Spodniak.
Over seven minutes later, the junior's second tally of the contest would spark an eight-minute stretch that saw the black and gold extend their lead to 5-1.
Rex Moe and
Ty Enns were also among the scorers for Adrian during that time period, with Moe's powerplay strike serving as the game-winner.
In the game's final frame, the Sabres utilized a two-and-a-half-minute run with a pair of goals to slice into the Bulldogs' cushion. If not for the goaltending heroics of
Cameron Gray in the closing moments, this game may have seen an extra period.
The senior came up clutch with five saves after Marian's third goal to preserve the local's victory.
In total, Gray closed the evening with 17 total stops on 20 Sabre shots.
Offensively,
Hunter Wendt rounded out the goal-scoring for the Bulldogs with a man-up tally in the opening twenty minutes.
Ryan Pitoscia had himself a game, contributing three assists.
The Bulldog men will be making their highly anticipated home-opener next Friday evening against Trine University. Puck-drop from Arrington Ice Arean is slated for 7 p.m.
