ADRIAN, Mich. – The No. 3 Adrian College NCAA men's hockey (4-1, 3-0 NCHA) team had its home opener on Friday night as they hosted the Thunder from Trine University (5-2, 2-1 NCHA). The Bulldogs hold a 14-0 record all time against the Thunder and were looking to keep it alive. Adrian succeeded with a 3-2 victory after a late goal from
Rex Moe.
In the first period after being outshot early,
Ty Enns buried a rebound from
Ryan Pitoscia to grab the early 1-0 lead.
Hunter Wendt also recorded an assist on the goal.
In the second period, Trine had a shot to get on the board early, but
Cameron Gray made back-to-back diving saves to keep the Adrian lead. Late in the period, the Thunder struck with just over two minutes left to play in the period to tie the game 1-1.
Trine broke the tie in the third period at 6:38 to grab a 2-1 lead over Adrian. Six minutes later,
Matus Spodniak picked up a goal to tie the game off a pass from
Alessio Luciani. With time winding down, another chance for Trine in front of the net, but Gray was there for another diving save. With under a minute to go in the third period, Luciani found
Rex Moe for the game winning goal.
Gray recorded the win in goal marking his third of the season with a total of 32 saves. Friday night's game marked the smallest winning margin in series history for the Bulldogs against the Thunder.
The Bulldogs will return to the ice on the road on Saturday, November 20 at Trine to wrap up the two game series. Tomorrow night's game is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
