No. 2 Men's Hockey Pushes Win Streak to 10; Defeats No. 9 Wilkes in Overtime

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – In the city of black and gold, it was Adrian's own flexing its muscles of steel en route to a thrilling overtime victory over No. 9 Wilkes University.

Zach Goberis banked in the game-winning goal off of a brilliant set-up by Jaden Shields three minutes and 16 seconds into the extra frame to push the Bulldogs to their tenth consecutive win.

"We stuck to our process today," said head coach Adam Krug, postgame. "We know that if we play our game we can wear teams out and things will go our way, and they certainly did tonight."

The visitors on the scoreboard got the puck rolling midway through opening period.

After winning a defensive zone faceoff, the puck was worked ahead to Matius Spodniak who flipped on the afterburners to gain entrance into the Adrian attacking zone. The junior then fed a pass in front to Alessio Luciani who tapped it home for the game's first tally.

Wilkes would net an equalizer near the latter stages of the frame to draw the score at 1-1 heading into the first intermission.

The Colonels continued to ride their new-found momentum into the second period, grabbing their only lead of the contest 46 seconds into the middle frame.

"They were good, and they played hard," noted Krug on Wilkes' performance. "They flew their wingers a couples of times and they were able to get in behind our defense. We made some adjustments after the first period and then reiterated again after the second.

Just over seven minutes after the host's go-ahead mark, the Bulldogs locked in an answer.

With the puck trickling down into the local's defensive end, Shields caught the Colonels in the midst of a line change and connected a forward pass to Zachary Heintz who proceeded to streak in on Wilkes' netminder Michael Paterson-Jones and finish low glove-hand side to knot the game again, at 2-2.

The third period saw nearly non-stop action from beginning to end, but neither side could locate the dagger, eventually leading to just the second overtime game of the season for Adrian.

The Bulldogs controlled every aspect of the deciding period, winning four of five faceoffs, and outshooting their opposition 4-0.

"All of our skaters did great today," expressed Krug. "(Cameron) Gray had some big saves to keep us in the game, despite what his save percentage ended up being."

Gray produced 13 saves on his way to his sixth win of the season in net for the black and gold.

Saturday's neutral site match marked Adrian's final appearance on the ice before the holiday break.

The second-ranked 'Dogs (10-1, 6-0 NCHA) will return to the confines of the Arrington Ice Arena on December 30 to challenge No. 5 Augsburg University.
