NORTHFIELD, VT. - On Sunday afternoon, the eighth-ranked Adrian women's hockey team battled No. 3 Elmira in the consolation game of the Northfield Savings Bank East-West Classic, hosted by Norwich University. The Bulldogs and the Soaring Eagles notched two goals each and nothing further, resulting in the second consecutive tie in the two team's series history.
The 'Dogs finished the afternoon with a 37-32 advantage in total shots, bringing in a team-high four each from
Sydney Daversa and
Kaleigh Cadorette. Adrian also came away with 58 percent of the game's faceoffs, including 5-of-7 in the overtime period.
Sophie Goldberg, who was tabbed with one of the contest's three stars, corralled clutch save after clutch save throughout the day, even shutting down a 2-on-0 break for the Soaring Eagles in the extra frame.
All told, the junior netminder wrapped up with 30 saves, 23 of which coming after the opposition's second goal.
Elmira's first goal opened the scoring at the Kreitzberg Arena, and with just over a minute left on the clock in the first period.
Then, in the following frame, the black and gold made their first breakthrough.
After garnering a 5-on-3 powerplay opportunity, the locals went to work.
Jessica VonRuden and
Kathryn Truban exchanges passes near the blue line before dumping the puck down near the goal line to
Une Bjelland. The junior attempted to center a pass, but instead had it redirected off of an Elmira skate and into the back of the net.
The Bulldogs continued to push for the lead later in the period, however the Soaring Eagles came racing back to restore their one-goal cushion heading into the second intermission.
In the third period, Adrian found itself with an early man-advantage, and did not waste it.
Maya Roy picked up a pass from Cadorette and carried it in towards the goal, only to have the puck knocked away right to the stick of
Karmen Anderson, who proceeded to rip a shot over the glove of the Elmira goaltender.
The sophomore's fifth goal of the season would ultimately be the game's final tally, as neither side could get a leg up on their competition from that point on.
Adrian will now enter the holiday break before returning to action on Sunday, January 2, 2022 in Toledo, Ohio for the 2022 Winterfest at Fifth Third Stadium.
