ADRIAN, Mich. - On Saturday afternoon, the Adrian women's basketball team returned to action for the first time in two weeks, hosting conference-foe Albion. After an action-packed first quarter that saw the two sides draw even, the visitors eventually settled in and stormed away en route to an 89-58 victory.
Elena Welker posted a game-high 25 points for the Brits, including 20 in the first half. In fact, the junior managed 13 of her side's 19 first-quarter points, keeping them within striking distance as the two rivals traded buckets to start.
In the second quarter, the Bulldogs (2-7, 0-3 MIAA) opened up a five-point advantage on their opposition, courtesy of back-to-back shots by
Chloe Gilbert and
Chelsea Palmer. However, an 13-8 run by Albion proceeded to relevel the score, at 32-32.
From that point, the momentum fell in favor of the Britons, who went on to hold the black and gold scoreless for the next five-plus minutes. During that stretch, Albion ran its lead up to as many at 17 points, and Adrian could never recover.
Palmer and Gilbert led the locals with 12 points each, including a spotless 3-for-3 effort from the latter from behind the 3-point arc.
Makayla Clement added 11 on a 4-of-7 showing from the floor for the 'Dogs, contributing six rebounds as well.
On the afternoon, Adrian tied a season-high with nine total 3-pointers made, shooting a season-best 47.4 percent from downtown.
The Bulldogs continue their final slate of games before the holiday on Tuesday evening at Earlham College, before returning to the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center the following day to take on Bluffton.
Both games are currently schedule for 6 p.m. tip-offs.
