WADDINGTON, N.Y. – The Adrian College bass fishing team competed in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops over the weekend. Out of 125 boats at the start of the tournament, the duo of
Hayden Scott and
Griffin Fernandes of the Bulldogs held the top spot of the leaderboard after the first two days. After advancing to Championship Saturday with 11 other teams, Scott and Fernandes held their lead and were named National Champions.
The duo put together three 20-plus pound days on the St. Lawrence River in Waddington, N.Y. Scott and Fernandes reeled in 22 pounds, 14 ounces on day one followed by 20 pounds, 6 ounces on day two and 20 pounds, 6 ounces on the final day to total 63 pounds, 10 ounces.
The tournament marked the first National Championship in Adrian College bass fishing program history. The Bulldogs were just named the No. 2 ranked team in the country in the 2021-22 Bass Pro Shops School of the Year preseason poll.
With the top place finish in the National Championship tournament, Scott and Fernandes qualify to the College Classic Bracket for a chance to compete at the professional level. In addition to their trophy, Scott and Fernandes take home $5,000 in prize money.
