ADRIAN, Mich. - The 2021 home opener for the Adrian women's soccer team did not disappoint. Facing an undefeated Mount Union squad, the Bulldogs hammered down defensively en route to another come-from-behind victory.
Junior,
Eve Davis drove home the game-winning goal for the black and gold in the 75th minute after an initial shot from
McKenna Mahoney was blocked by a Raiders' defender.
The Canton, Michigan native did not even need to put an extra touch on the loose ball, sending a whistling shot past the goalkeeper and into the right side of the net from just over ten yards out.
"We didn't create the quantity of chances that we would have liked," noted head coach
Ali Alamdari. Â "But Eve hit a clinical finish and got us the result."
The visitors wasted little time off the opening kick, as Madison Pepper would work the first shot of the game under the outreached arm of the Bulldogs' netminder in the 5th minute to give Mount Union an early lead.
"They have a dangerous attack that doesn't spend a lot of time building and can strike at any moment," said Alamdari. "They took advantage of the wind and, to their credit, did a much better job using it when they had it at their back than we did."
It did take some time for the locals to begin generating opportunites of their own, but in the later stages of the first half, things started to roll their way. A corner kick in the 37th minute would prove just as much.
The delivery was met by the soaring head of
Megan Louwers who turned the ball on net, only to have it saved off the line by Rylee Oldfield.
Not long after, Adrian (3-2) garnered yet another corner, one of six total in the match for the Bulldogs. This set piece wound up becoming entangled in the traffic in the box, striking a Raider in the arm and drawing an Adrian penalty kick.
Senior captain, Mahoney stepped up to the twelve-yard mark and converted a commanding shot to Oldfield's right side, knotting the match at 1-1 heading into the locker rooms.
In the second half, the Bulldogs would fend off a Raiders' corner kick and shot on goal before Davis' tally. From there, the home side's defense limited the opposition to just one more shot, securing a third win of the season. In fact, all three wins for the locals this season have come against previously-unbeaten opponents.
On the afternoon, Mahoney paced Adrian with three total shots, while
Kelsey Zoli and Louwers each chipped in two, including two shots on goal from the later.
Taylor Fischer made three saves between the posts for the 'Dogs.
The black and gold's next task is a Wednesday night bout with Otterbein at Docking Stadium.
"We have a lot to work on for next week," said Alamdari. "Otterbein and Wheaton are both top NCAA programs and we'll need to step our game up to have a chance at a positive result or two."
