HANCOCK, Mich. - At Houghton County Arena, the Adrian women's hockey team quickly overcame an early deficit en route to a 7-1 victory over Finlandia.
After surrendering a Lions' goal in the game's opening minute, the Bulldogs (9-5-1, 6-0-0 NCHA) buckled down defensively and turned up the offense, rallying off seven unanswered goals from seven different scorers.
Jessica VonRuden,
Karmen Anderson,
Une Bjelland,
Callie Wollschlager,
Reaghan Pietrowski,
Aileena Dopheide and
Jocelin Hudanish each pushed one home for the black and gold, marking a new season-high for individual goal scorers in a single game.
The captain, VonRuden drew Adrian level after the visitors fell behind, slapping a perfectly-placed shot over the glove of the Finlandia netminder. Shortly after, a wrister snipped by Anderson from the slot moved the 'Dogs into the driver's seat with a 2-1 advantage.
Bjelland wrapped-up the scoring of the first period, taking an extra pass from Pietrowski and elevating the puck over a mad scramble in front of the goal-mouth.
In the game's middle period, Wollschlager got the locals rolling after collecting a rebound and firing it into the yawning net, ballooning the lead up to 4-1. Then, less than three minutes later, Pietrowski channeled her inner VonRuden with a slapper of her own, whistling the puck past the traffic in the middle and into the back of the net.
Things got off to a slower start in the third frame, but the Bulldogs never let up. With under ten minutes on the clock, Dopheide tallied the third goal of her freshman campaign, picking up her own rebound and tucking it in on the shortside.
Hudanish added to the avalanche hard on the heels of Dopheide's mark, slicing a wrist shot off of an Adrian rush, giving the sophomore her first goal since December 11.
On the afternoon, the Bulldogs finished with 54 total shots on goal, while converting on 2-of-8 man-advantage opportunities.
In goal,
Sophie Goldberg was credited with the win after stopping six shots. In fact, the goaltender did not see a single shot come her way in the final twenty minutes.
Adrian goes for the weekend sweep tomorrow morning, taking on the Lions once again. Puck-drop is slated for 11:30 a.m.
