HANCOCK, Mich. - At Houghton County Arena, it may have taken some late-game heroics, but the Adrian women's hockey team successfully completed a two-game sweep of Finlandia University on Saturday afternoon, knocking-off the Lions 3-2.
The narrow victory caps off a three-day, three-game weekend for the Bulldogs, in which they outscored their opposition 18-3.
With the contest knotted at 2-2, it came down to a
Sydney Daversa breakaway goal eight minutes into the third frame to break the deadlock. The fifth-year senior worked her way behind the defense and finished the play with a nifty forehand-to-backhand shot over the sprawling Lions' netminder.
It was Daversa's team-leading third goal of the weekend and her sixth of the 2021-22 season.
Reaghan Pietrowski broke the ice early in the first period, cashing in on a rebound off of a shot from
Julia Barrett.
Finlandia tied the contest at one goal apiece almost 10 minutes later, and eventually grabbed its only lead of the day during the opening stages of the second period.
The hosts managed to carry their advantage through the remainder of the middle period and into the final intermission.
Then, three minutes into the third period, the Bulldogs drew level when
Maya Roy found a soft spot through traffic for her first tally of the year.
Adrian's defense took over from there, setting up Daversa for the go-ahead goal.
Between the pipes,
Denisa Jandova stood tall despite the two-goal setback, finishing with 10 saves.
Karmen Anderson,
Jessica VonRuden, Rilei and Barrett each contributed one assist for the 'Dogs, who are due to return to Arrington Ice Arena next weekend to host Lake Forest College.
