Women's Hockey Finishes Minnesota Trip with a Loss at Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - At the Augsburg Ice Arena, the ninth-ranked Bulldog women's hockey team fell just short of wrapping its Minnesota road trip on a high note, as the homestanding Auggies edged out the short-handed Bulldogs 3-2.

Freshman Aileena Dopheide matched a career-high with her second multi-point effort in four games. The German-born forward tallied her second goal of the season, while also adding as assist.

Despite an evenly-matched second period, the difference of Saturday afternoon came in the first period of the day on a goal from Augsburg's Brooke Leone. The senior's mark came just under two and-a-half minutes into the contest, and would eventually go down as the game-winning goal.

Adrian's first goal of the afternoon would fall in early in the middle period on the powerplay, but not before the Auggies ate up some man-advantage time with a shorthanded score themselves.

Off the ensuing faceoff following the home side's second tally, Une Bjelland picked up the puck behind her own net and started up the middle of the ice. After gaining entrance into the attacking zone, the junior fed a pass back to Dopheide who sent a shot in off the goaltenders' pads and into the back of net.

Then, later on in the frame, with the 'Dogs trailing 3-1, a faceoff won by the visitors in their offensive zone found Wollschlager on netminders left hand side. After controlling the puck, the sophomore sniped one to the short-side, again trimming the deficit down to a single goal.

Unfortunately for the black and gold, the now, 3-2 scoreline remained constant through the final period, resulting in a third consecutive loss.

Gwen Bowler, in her third-straight start in goal for Adrian (7-5-1), recorded 24 saves to close her road trip with an 0.885 save percentage.

The Bulldogs are slated to return to the ice next weekend for a home conference series against Lawrence University. The first game is scheduled for Friday evening at the Arrington Ice Arena.
