ADRIAN, Mich. – It was a completely different hockey game on Saturday afternoon compared to Friday night's opener for the Adrian College NCAA men's hockey team. After defeating No. 3 Utica in overtime the night before, the No. 1 Bulldogs demolished the Pioneers 8-3 to sweep the series.
Matus Spodniak got things rolling for Adrian with a goal in the first period netting his third of the season. Nine minutes later, Spodniak struck again to lead 2-0 bringing the advantage into the intermission.
In the second,
Ty Enns netted his first goal of the year 23 seconds into the period, but Utica answered two minutes later to bring the score to 3-1. The Bulldogs earned an advantage on a powerplay which they took advantage of with Spodniak completing the hat trick. With less than three minutes to go in the second period, Utica scored to bring the score to 4-2 heading into the third period.
In the third period, the Bulldogs scored three goals in one minute.
Hunter Wendt scored to make it 5-2 followed by a goal from
Bradley Somers and
Ryan Pitoscia.
John Kaljian added to the scoring with a deflection off a shot from
Chase Spencer to lead 8-2. Utica scored with eight minutes to go in the game, but the Bulldogs were too far ahead for the Pioneers to come back.
Spodniak finished with four points on the day as he added an assist to his hat trick.
Zachary Heintz also added three points on the day with three assists followed by a pair of assists from
Sam Ruffin and
Ayodele Adeniye.
Dershahn Stewart got the start in goal for the Bulldogs totaling 31 saves.
The Bulldogs will head out on the road this week as they travel to Minnesota to take on Augsburg University in a 2022 NCAA semifinal rematch on Thursday, November 3 at 8:00 PM EST.
