PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Adrian Men's rowing team continued its strong start to the Fall season with another impressive performance at Head of the Ohio on Saturday. With medals in both the Eight and Four at the Head of the Cuyahoga, the team went one better with a win in the Varsity Eight this weekend.
The morning began with the Men's Open 4+ category, and the crew were led down the fast flowing course by Coxswain
Sam Wyzlic (SO). Starting towards the back of the pack, Adrian got off to a strong start, passing the University of Miami Ohio in quick order, before making large strides into the Carnegie Mellon crew ahead. The Bulldogs were rowing in this particular lineup for the first time ever, but demonstrated excellent control and depth throughout to post a fast time at the line.
In the afternoon, the Men's Open 8+ category saw Adrian again starting towards the rear of the field, and determined to make up ground on those ahead. The Bulldogs got off to a quick start, remaining long and strong in the fast current and stiff tailwinds, and were able to overtake the Pennsylvania State crew early on and focus on putting together a fast piece in clear water. The aggressive approach paid off, with the Eight taking home gold medals with their time of 12:26.5 setting them 30 seconds ahead of second place University of Pittsburgh (12:55.4).
"The team had a really solid weekend, the Four put forth a great performance in a brand new lineup while the Eight continues to go from strength to strength. It was unlucky that a timing error may have kept the Four out of medal positions, but it was more than made up for with such a strong showing in the Eight." Said Coach
Sam Pratt of the weekend. "The team is really motivated right now, and our eye remains fixed on the upcoming Head of the Charles regatta in three weeks' time."
The Adrian Men's Rowing team is back in action on 10/15 at the Head of the Grand regatta.
