Men's Hockey Locks Up Trip to Harris Cup Final with Win over Trine

ADRIAN, Mich. – The NCHA Harris Cup semifinals took place over the weekend with the No. 1 Adrian College NCAA men's hockey team playing host to the fourth seeded Trine University Thunder. Adrian went off for four goals in the second period to come away with a 5-2 win and advance to the Harris Cup Final.

Adrian scored off the opening faceoff on a dump in from Hunter Wendt that was picked up by the Trine goalie before Matt Eller netted his first goal of the season coming unassisted. It didn't take Trine long to answer as they scored 52 seconds later to tie the game 1-1.

The Bulldogs were quick to score again to open the second to take a 2-1 lead. Sam Ruffin netted a power play go on an assist from Rex Moe and Terry Ryder. Seven minutes later, Matus Spodniak found the back of the net to extend the lead to 3-1. Another power play opportunity for Adrian that they took advantage of as Zach Heintz scored to make it 4-1. Late in the period, Ruffin flipped a puck up ice to Ty Enns. After missing on his first shot attempt, it got the goaltender to dive giving Enns and open net to lead 5-1.

Adrian was on a power play in the second that Trine was lucky enough to get a breakaway, but Cameron Gray was there to make the save. Trine did net a second period goal to take a 5-2 Adrian lead into the second intermission.

The third period was scoreless leaving the score at 5-2. The Thunder had a chance on a 5-on-3 power play, but the Adrian defense came up strong and didn't allow a goal.

Gray finished the game with 20 saves while allowing a pair of goals.

Adrian will move on to the Harris Cup Finals next weekend and will face the winner of St. Norbert and Aurora on Saturday, March 5 at 7:00 PM.
