Bulldogs Win One, Drop Another on Day Two of Spring Break

CLERMONT, Fla. - On day two of the Bulldog softball team's Spring Break trip, the black and gold opened with a bang against Neumann University before dropping their afternoon bout against the University of Dubuque.

Game 1: Adrian 8, Neumann 3

For the second consecutive game, the Bulldogs got the bats rolling early. After posting four runs in the opening inning against Chatham on Sunday, Adrian came right back with a five-piece in the first inning against the Knights.

Genna Marasco and Maggie Leveille led things off with back-to-back singles, and after each stealing a base, the duo was brought home on a Hailey DeChalk double through the left side.

Then, on the very next at-bat, Lauren McCulligh smacked a two-run home run to straight-away center, ballooning the Bulldogs' lead to 4-0 without a single out recorded.

Later in the inning, after a walk issued to Katie Connolly, the senior was plated by a Madison Cvengros sacrifice fly to close out the 'Dogs' first-inning onslaught.

Neumann got one run back in the following half-inning, but Adrian picked it back up almost immediately.

In the second inning, Marasco notched her second hit of the day with a single up the middle, eventually coming around to score off of an RBI-single by Leveille.

From there, the action simmered down, with the Knights grabbing their final two runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Adrian tallied its last run in the subsequent half-inning, courtesy of Leveille, once again.

The freshman was one of four Bulldogs to record multiple hits against the Knights, along with Marasco, DeChalk and McCulligh.

In the circle, Macee Schang corralled her first career win after working four hitless relief innings while striking out seven.

Game 2: Adrian 3, University of Dubuque 10

In Adrian's second outing of the day, the University of Dubuque scored two-or-more runs in four-straight innings en route to a 10-3 decision.

After the Spartans snapped a scoreless deadlock with three runs in the bottom leg of the third, the 'Dogs quickly began orchestrating a response.

Lead-off batter Marasco found her way up to second base off of an infield miscue, then Leveille stepped up and knocked her fellow freshman across the plate with a double to deep center.

After advancing to third base on a DeChalk single, Leveille used her speed to score Adrian's second run on a passed ball.

The Bulldogs' garnered their last mark off the bat of Katie Connolly, who laid down a sacrifice bunt perfectly to plate DeChalk.

Dubuque would go on to score seven unanswered, however, brining the black and gold back down to an even 2-2 overall record after two days of action.

Natalie Mathers got the start for Adrian in game two, going 4.2 innings and allowing five hits while also retiring two on strikes.

Next up for the 'Dogs is a Tuesday doubleheader with Eastern University and Houghton College, beginning at 10 a.m.
