ADRIAN, Mich. - At the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center, the Adrian women's basketball team turned up the heat in the second half, posting a double-digit come-from-behind victory to sweep the season series with Olivet and clinch its first home win of the 2021-22 season.
Chelsea Palmer was a menace for the Bulldogs (7-13, 4-8 MIAA) in the paint, finishing with 21 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high five blocks, making her the first player in program history in the last 22 years to record at least 10 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks in a single game.
Outside the paint,
Jordan Phillips continued to be the hot hand for the black and gold from distance, connecting of 5-of-7 from three-point territory, including a dagger in the final minute.
It was not an easy start for Adrian, however, as the visitors raced out to a 15-4 lead with just over a minute left in the first quarter.
Despite the 'Dogs managing the last five points of the frame, the Comets came right back out in the second quarter and quickly restored their hefty advantage. Nevertheless, the locals remained persistent, trimming the deficit down to 29-24 by the halftime break.
Olivet maintained its lead through the third frame, building it back up to as many as eight points until a 7-0 Adrian run, capitalized by a Phillips' three-pointer, slashed the margin to just one.
Then, at last, in the opening moments of the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs broke through. With the score locked at 43-43, pre-quarter substitution
Kylie Skidmore made the most of her limited time on the floor with the go-ahead free throws. Adrian never looked back from that point on, riding their momentum down to the final buzzer.
All told, the 'Dogs closed the evening with their fourth-best shooting performance of the season, going 25-for-60 (0.417) from the field.
Phillips, who was making only her eighth career start, finished with a personal-best 17 points, as well as three assists and two steals.
The women are now off from competition until February 9 when they travel to Alma.
