ADRIAN, Mich. - On Friday evening, the Adrian men's volleyball team played its penultimate non-conference match of the 2022 campaign, heading across town to challenge Siena Heights University. Despite a late push after dropping the first two sets, the Bulldogs (5-16, 2-2 MCVL) ultimately fell to the homestanding Saints in four.
Offensively,
Chase Heuer went off for a match-high 20 kills, marking the fifth time in his last six appearances that the sophomore has posted 17 or more successful attacks.
Nevertheless, the 'Dogs could not overcome a steady Siena Heights attack that turned in a 0.417 hitting percentage in the second set before closing with a 0.667 effort in the deciding fourth set.
The evening's first frame saw a solid start by the visitors, as they opened up a 7-3 lead with the help of three kills by Heuer. Adrian maintained its four-point lead to move ahead 11-7, but a subsequent eight-point run by Siena Heights flipped the momentum in their favor.
The Bulldogs trailed by as many five points down the stretch, and a 5-1 run late nearly brought them all the way back. The Saints, however, got the last tally, sealing the first set 25-23.
Adrian soon found itself in a two-sets to none hole after a 25-16 result in the next frame. Then, in the following set, the black and gold found some life.
After trading shots to a 6-6 tie, the 'Dogs strung together a four-point swing, sparked by a
Tedrick Gula kill, to slip in front, 10-6.
The Saints kept their composure, turning in a 10-5 stretch to restore their advantage and take a 16-15 lead. However, Adrian utilized a plus-0.300 attack percentage to get itself back in the driver's seat, and behind a
Branden Gula kill and a Siena Heights' miscue, win the frame, 25-21.
Unfortunately, in the fourth frame, Siena Heights was near-unstoppable on offense, keeping itself error-free en route to a win.
As for Adrian,
Tedrick Gula finished behind Heuer with 11 kills, while Ravelo added a match-high 38 assists.
Next up for the Bulldogs is their non-conference finale at Aquinas College on March 15.
