WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Derek Plitt saved his best for last this weekend.
After entering the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships ranked outside of the top five in his two running events, the senior went into Saturday's finals and posted back-to-back second-place finishes to claim All-American status for the first time in his indoor-career.
On top of his podium efforts, Plitt also left little doubt on the stopwatch, obliterating his own school-record in the 200-meter dash not once, but twice.
The memorable two-day stay in North Carolina began with some drama on Friday afternoon. In the preliminary round of the 60-meter dash, Plitt finished third in his respective heat, turning in a time of 6.85. However, it came down to the next decimal point place value over. In fact, with an official time of 6.846, he had secured a spot in the final round by only four-thousandths of a second (0.004).
Then, almost an hour later, Plitt was back on the track for the second of his preliminary races. This particular race did not come with any of the suspense that his first appearance did, but all eyes still went to the time on the clock. With a sprint of 21.76, not only had he won his heat, the program-record that he set earlier in the season had fallen by 0.14.
That mark did not stand for long, however. On Saturday, in the 200-meter finals, Plitt shaved another 0.14 off of his record-time, finishing with a time of 21.62 en route to a runner-up placement.
Earlier in the day, the senior nearly broke through his personal-best in the 60-meter finals, closing with a run of 6.81 for another second-place performance.
All told, Plitt becomes the fifth different All-American in program history for men's indoor track and field, the third different men's athlete to garner that status in both indoor and outdoor competition, and the first-ever over both seasons to be named an All-American in multiple events at the same championships.
