ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College men's basketball team began the 2023 calendar year with a non-conference matchup against Capital University at home on Monday afternoon. The Bulldogs and Comets to kept things close in the first half with Capital leading 39-35 at the break, but the Comets pulled ahead in the second half to win 86-70.
The Bulldogs shot 13-of-26 in the first half for a field goal percentage of 50%. Adrian knocked down three, three-point baskets from
Michael Rightnowar,
Kendall Bellamy, and
Deonta Pearson. The Bulldogs trailed with 9:10 to go in the half, but battled back to lead by five with 4:42 to go. Capital jumped out to another six-point lead with a minute to go in the half, but a pair of free throws by Pearson brought the score to 39-35 at the break.
Adrian battled back early in the second half.
De'Ovion Price, Pearson, Bellamy, and
Josh Jordan netted basketball to put the Bulldogs up six. Capital began to control the rest of the game and led by ten with 5:14 to go. After a pair of three-pointers from
Nick Seifert and Pearson, Adrian trailed 71-67. Capital grabbed the momentum again late in the half and came away with an 86-70 win.
Price led the Bulldogs with 21 points on the afternoon. Seifert and Bellamy each added 11 while Pearson picked up 16 off the bench. Bellamy came a rebound shy of a double-double as he finished with nine.
Adrian will have a quick turnaround and open MIAA play on the road at Olivet College on Wednesday, January 4 at 7:30 PM.
