Bulldogs Fall To Knights In Thursday MIAA Matchup

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –  The Adrian College women's basketball team saw their two-game win streak snapped in a 61-47 loss to Calvin University in a Thursday night MIAA matchup.

How It Happened
The women's basketball team ran off to a fast start with two three pointers from Kiara Wernette and Jordan Phillips to take a quick 8-3 lead over the Knights with 6:52 remaining in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs headed into the break down three, 27-24. As a team, the Bulldogs shot 33% from the field and 37.5% from three. At the end of the first half, Phillips and Wernette led the way for the Bulldogs, combining for 15 points.  Makayla Clement recorded a game high six assists, with only one turnover on the evening. Tonight, Clement tied her career high in assists, matching her last six assist game, which occurred on January 4, against Olivet this season.

After being outscored 15-11 in the third quarter, the Bulldogs faced an eight-point deficit heading into the fourth. To begin the final frame of play, the Adrian women's basketball team started the first 4:11 with a 9-8 advantage. An and-one converted by Bailey Taylor brought the Bulldogs within six at 50-44 against the Knights. However, the Knights would close the quarter on a 11-3 run to seal the game.

Freshman Ashlyn Weatherly corralled nine rebounds tonight. With her ninth rebound with 3:55 remaining in the contest, Weatherly for the third straight game recorded nine rebounds, a career best for the freshman.

Phillips, the reigning MIAA women's basketball player of the week scored eight points and hit two threes enroute to her career high 11th straight game with at least one three pointer made during tonight's contest. Phillips became the first Adrian College women's basketball player to receive the player of the week honor since alumni Chelsea Palmer did so on November 15, 2021.
