ADA, Ohio – The Adrian College men's lacrosse team traveled to Ohio Northern University on Wednesday afternoon to begin the 2023 season. Unfortunately, the team's first game of the year didn't go as planned as they dropped the opener 15-9 to the Polar Bears.
Adrian and Ohio Northern were tied after the first quarter at 3-3. The Polar Bears got on the board early, but
Michael Jonas responded to tie the game. Fifty second later,
Brandon Hoerauf gave the Bulldogs the lead 2-1 with 8:19 left to play in the quarter. Ohio Northern scored back-to-back goals, but Jonas found the back of the net with 20 seconds to go to end the first quarter tied 3-3.
In the second quarter,
Jake Coakley and
Bowen Sparks scored to give the Bulldogs a 5-3 lead. Ohio Northern went on a run and scored the next four goals to lead Adrian 7-5.
Cameron Reed broke up the run making it a one goal game, but Ohio Northern quickly answered. With time running down in the first half, Jonas scored his third goal of the game to bring the scored to 8-7 in favor of Ohio Northern going into halftime.
The Bulldogs struggled in the second half as they were outscored 4-1 in the third quarter.
Austin Selvage had the lone third quarter goal assisted by
Alec Winegar to make it a 10-8 game. Adrian was outscored in the fourth quarter 3-1 with Selvage netting the only fourth quarter goal assisted by Jonas.
The Bulldogs totaled 16 shots on goal for the afternoon while Ohio Northern finished with 24. As a team Adrian picked up 29 ground balls with a team-high of five coming from Reed. Jonas led the Bulldogs with four points on three goals and an assist. Selvage finished the day with a pair of goals while
Derek Hassell recorded a pair of assists.
Sam Spangler got the start in goal for the Bulldogs where he finished the day with 12 saves.
Mason Obeldobel saw ten minutes of action in the cage where he recorded three saves.
The Bulldogs will look to grab their first win of the year on Saturday, February 25 at 2:00 PM when they host Wittenberg University for the team's home opener.
