ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College men's lacrosse team hosted its home opener on Saturday at Docking Stadium. The Bulldogs took on the Wittenberg University Tigers where they came away with a 12-8 victory after a later fourth quarter run.
Adrian led 3-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Alec Winegar started the scoring for Adrian. Later in the quarter,
Austin Selvage scored to lead 2-0.
Derek Hassel took advantage of a Wittenberg penalty and scored a man-up goal to lead 3-0.
Trenton Garcia extended the lead to 4-0 to open the second quarter. Wittenberg went on to net back-to-back goals to cut into the lead. Winegar responded with his second goal of the game followed by a goal from
Jake Coakley to lead 6-2. With under a minute to go in the half, Wittenberg scored to bring the score to 6-3 in favor of Adrian.
Adrian and Wittenberg traded goals early in the third quarter.
Brandon Hoerauf had the opening goal which was shortly answered by the Tigers.
Michael Jonas scored to lead 8-4, but Wittenberg made it a two-goal game entering the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, Wittenberg scored twice to tie the game 8-8 with eight minutes to go. The Bulldogs went on to spark a late run scoring four unanswered goals. Winegar scored his third of the game while Coakley scored his second.
Brett Koczenasz found the back of the net which was followed by the final goal from Jonas.
Jonas finished the day with six points as he added four assists to his two-goal afternoon. Coakley added a pair of assists while Selvage added one as well.
Cameron Reed led the team on defense with four caused turnovers while
Riley Edwards finished with three.
Gino Capicchioni finished 12-of-18 on the face off with a team-high six ground balls.
Ethan Krupp got the start in goal for Adrian where he finished the day with eight saves.
Adrian's next game will be at home on Wednesday, March 1 as they host Oberlin College at 3:00 PM.
