SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Adrian College men's lacrosse team took a trip to Tennessee over the weekend to take on Sewanee. The Bulldogs played in a thriller coming away with a 14-13 win in triple overtime to move to 2-2 on the season.
Michael Jonas started the scoring taking a 1-0 lead early in the game. Sewanee struck back-to-back to take a 2-1 lead.
Derek Hassel sparked a run for Adrian tying the game 2-2. Jonas went on to score a pair of goals along with a goal from
Austin Selvage to lead 5-2. Sewanee responded with four unanswered to lead 6-5 at the end of the first. It was a light second quarter with Jonas netting the only Adrian goal which was answered by Sewanee with two minutes left to head into halftime with the Bulldogs trailing 7-6.
Out of the break, Sewanee scored to open the second half, but back came Adrian.
Riley Edwards scored followed by another Adrian goal after the Sewanee goaltender left the net. Selvage and Hassel each netted their second of the game to lead 10-8. Sewanee made it a one-goal game before entering the fourth.
Bowen Sparks put the Bulldogs up 11-9 which was later answered by Sewanee to tie the game 11-11. Jonas and
Jake Coakley gave the Bulldogs a 13-11 lead, but Sewanee tied the game with 41 seconds to go.
It took three overtimes to decide a winner. After winning the opening face off in the third overtime, Jonas circled around the Sewanee net and scored the golden goal to give the Bulldogs the 14-13 victory.
Jonas totaled eight points on the day to lead Adrian on six goals and two assists.
Trenton Garcia picked up five ground balls while
Cameron Reed,
Brandon Hoerauf, and Jonas each recorded two caused turnovers.
Ethan Krupp and
Mason Obeldobel split time in goal on Saturday afternoon with Obeldobel leading the way with 18 saves.
The Bulldogs will continue their span of road games with Capital on Wednesday, March 8 at 3:00 PM.
