ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College women's basketball team battled with Calvin University on Wednesday night at home to kick off the new year. The Bulldogs sparked a fourth quarter rally against the Knights, but came up short in the contest falling 51-47.
Calvin jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the first quarter, but Adrian battled back to grab a one-point lead.
Aubrie Ickes,
Morgan Babb,
Darby Lienerth, and
Kylie Skidmore scored for the Bulldogs during the run. Calvin scored a jumper at the end of the quarter to take a 13-12 lead after the first. Adrian came out hot in the second where they led by as many as five.
Julia Tierman and
Olivia Green recorded baskets for the Bulldogs to lead 22-20 at half.
Calvin began to knock down shots and lead 42-34 entering the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run in the fourth quarter with the help of five made free throws from Ickes. Adrian trailed by two with 1:27 remaining in the game, but was forced to foul late resulting in a 51-47 loss.
Ickes finished the day leading all scorers with 18 points. Green added six points for the Bulldogs while Tierman collected five. The Bulldogs controlled the boards winning the rebound battle, 35-30. Tierman, Ickes, and
Ashlyn Weatherly recorded five rebounds apiece.
The Bulldogs fall to 7-5 on the season and sit 2-2 in MIAA play. Adrian will resume MIAA competition on Saturday, January 6 at 1:00 PM when they host Albion College.
