ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Adrian College Men's Lacrosse team were victors in their home opener on Wednesday afternoon, taming the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University in a triple overtime thriller, 12-11.
The Bulldogs got off to an early deficit as they trailed ONU, 3-1, after the first quarter.
Tyler Ristau scored the opening goal for Adrian, unassisted.
Adrian returned the favor in the second quarter, this time controlling the play and potting three goals to ONU's one to make it 4-4 at the half. Bulldog goals in the second frame came from
Jason Klein and two from
Cameron Reed.
Third quarter action witnessed the Bulldogs and Polar Bears continue to claw back and forth, scoring three more goals each.
Alec Winegar opened the scoring for Adrian in the third while a man up, before
Trace Tidswell scored his first collegiate goal and
Riley Edwards potted a tally of his own. The two teams head for the final frame tied at 7.
In the fourth quarter, after finishing the first three quarters tied, the Bulldogs and Polar Bears decided to do it again as four goals each came in the fourth frame, sending the game to overtime tied at 11. Goals from
Brandon Hoerauf,
Michael Jonas,
Derek Hassel, and
Jake Coakley helped Adrian reach extra time.
After two scoreless sudden death quarters, the Bulldogs would eventually solve ONU once more as Jonas sealed it for the home team in triple overtime with his second of the game to secure the home opener win in front of a heavy crowd.
Stat leaders for Adrian today included Hoerauf and Coakley with eight shots, Jonas with five shots on goal, Reed with seven ground balls, and
AJ Hayes with four caused turnovers.
Sam Spangler was a force in goal, making 16 key saves for Adrian in the win.
The Bulldogs will next be in action on March 2 at Oberlin College. Face off at 1:00 PM.
