HARTFORD, Conn. – The Adrian College NCAA men's hockey team are competing in their third NCAA Division III Frozen Four this weekend. Adrian advanced to the Frozen Four after defeating UW-Stevens Point in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament followed by a win over St. Norbert in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
Adrian comes in as the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament sitting at 24-6-1 on the season. The team will face off against Trinity College who holds the No. 2 seed with a 24-3-1 record. Trinity College is serving as the host of the Division III Frozen Four, so Thursday's Semifinal Game will bring a home game atmosphere for Trinity.
The Bulldogs and the Bantams match up well as the Bulldogs average 4.6 goals per game while Trinity averages 3.4. On the defensive side, Trinity averaged 1.2 goals allowed per game while Adrian allows 1.8. The Bulldogs are 24.6% on the power play this season and 85.1% on the penalty kill while Trinity sits at 20.2% on the power play and 90.8% on the penalty kill.
Adrian continues to be led by
Mathew Rehding who has 48 points on the season with 16 goals and 32 assists. Rehding ranks second in the NCAA Division III in points and first in assists.
Jaden Shields ranks third in the NCAA in assists followed by
Bradley Somers in sixth.
Zachary Heintz leads the team in goals with 18 on the season as part of his 39 points. Shields also has 39 points on the year for Adrian followed by 37 from Somers and 34 from
Jacob Suede. Adrian will stick with
Dershahn Stewart in goal who earned his 20
th win of the year against St. Norbert in the NCAA Quarterfinals. He holds a 1.78 goals against average with a .935 save percentage.
Trinity's leading point scorer sits with 22 points on 11 goals and 11 assists. Trinity's other top goal scorer sits with ten goals on the season while the team has five additional players in double digits for assists. Trinity's starting goaltender has earned the decision in every game this season sitting with a 24-3-1 record with seven shutouts. He holds a 1.20 goals against average with a .943 save percentage.
The Bulldogs are 2-2 all-time against Trinity with the series dating back to the 2014-15 season. The teams matched up in the NCAA Frozen Four in 2015 where Trinity came away with a 5-3 win. Trinity went on to win the National Championship that season. The Bulldogs have won the last two matchups against Trinity in 2018 (W, 4-1) and 2021 (W, 1-0). Both of Adrian's wins have come on the road at Trinity.
The Bulldogs and the Bantams will drop the puck on Thursday, March 21 at 7:00 PM EST from the Koeppel Community Sports Center in Hartford, Connecticut.
