CEDAR FALLS, IOWA. - The Adrian College women's wrestling team traveled to the annual NWCA Women's Duals.
women's wrestling faced a challenging slate of duals over the weekend, battling against some of the top teams in the nation.
The first dual of the weekend saw Adrian face off against the powerhouse Wartburg College Knights. Wartburg took control early, winning the first three bouts to build a solid lead. However, sophomore Sophia Renteria stepped up for the Bulldogs, earning a pinfall victory at 124 pounds to get Adrian on the scoreboard. Wartburg responded by winning the next four matches, but freshman Mia Gaetjens fought hard and secured a decision win in her match at 180 pounds. Despite a strong effort from the Bulldogs, Wartburg would go on to win the dual 38-8.
In the second dual, Adrian squared off against Aurora University. The Bulldogs found themselves in a hole early, as Aurora claimed the first bout. However, junior Alexis Hart-Butcher sparked the Bulldogs' momentum with a dominant pinfall victory at 110 pounds. Junior Sharla Juhas continued the rally with another pin, bringing the score closer and energizing the team. Despite the momentum shift, Aurora regained control, winning the next six bouts to secure a 33-15 victory. Freshman Josie House capped the dual for Adrian with a win by forfeit.
The third dual saw Adrian face University of Wisconsin Stevens Point. Stevens Point came out firing, sweeping the first eight matches to take a commanding lead. The Bulldogs didn't back down, Gaetjens delivered a tech fall victory, and House followed with a pinfall win in the final bout of the dual. Despite the strong finish, Stevens Point claimed the dual 38-9.
In the final dual of the weekend, Adrian faced a tough Lock Haven University squad. After Lock Haven took the first match, Alexis Hart-Butcher got the Bulldogs on the board with a win by forfeit at 110 pounds. Lock Haven would then win the next six matches, but Gaetjens provided a bright spot for Adrian with a pinfall victory. The Bulldogs showed grit, but Lock Haven sealed the win with a 38-10 final score.
Adrian is back in action on Sunday, January 19th where they will travel to Guelph, Ontario for the Guelph Open.
