KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The No. 5 Adrian College Men's ACHA Division 1 hockey team exploded for twenty goals in the team's opening series of the semester this weekend, shutting out the Western Michigan Stallions 12-0 and 8-0. In the midst of it all, the Bulldogs made history, collecting the 500th win in program history.
With three of their key players and Head Coach over in Italy with Team USA for the World University Games, the Bulldogs came together under the helm of Associate Head Coach,
Doug Raymond '14, for the first two games of the second half of the campaign, putting together a couple dominating performances.
The Bulldogs and Stallions met at the Arrington Ice Arena on Thursday evening to open the home-and-home series. It was all Adrian right from the jump as the Bulldogs out-shot the Stallions 63-12 in the contest resulting in twelve goals.
Alex Schaumburger,
Griffin Zaske (x2),
Keegan DeCaluwe (x2),
Brandon Nye,
Hunter Allen,
Andreas Fleutot, and
Cash Regan accounted for nine of the twelve tallies.
Matthew DiCesare added a hat-trick to round out the offense, including one goal scored while short-handed.
Justin Jamer and Regan added three assists, while Zaske,
Cyrus Toth, and
Chad Noetzel registered two helpers of their own. Sophomore netminder,
Peyton Trzaska, stopped all twelve shots faced for his 13th win and 5th shutout of the season.
Thursday's win marked the 500th in program history since the year 2007 when the program began. Those 500 wins include 12 Conference Regular Season Championships, 8 Conference Playoff Championships, and 3 ACHA Division 1 National Championships. The Bulldogs reached this historic milestone in their 628th game, giving them an overall record in the last 17-plus seasons of 500 wins, 124 losses, and 4 ties.
Adrian traveled to Kalamazoo on Saturday to close the series, meeting with the Stallions at Lawson Ice Arena for a matinee finish. The Bulldogs strung together another blanking of the Stallions, out-shooting them once again, this time by a 85-19 tally. Schaumburger,
Nash Hatcher,
Ethan McLaughlin, Fleutot, Regan and Noetzel potted goals, while DiCesare continued his hot streak, adding two more to his new season total of 15, which now leads the Bulldogs in that category.
Matteo Turrin, Jamer, DeCaluwe, and Schaumburger each garnered a pair of helpers in the series clincher. Senior goaltender,
Noah Decottignies, who recently set the program record for career shutouts, made 19 saves in the victory for his 5th win and 4th shutout of the 2024-25 season.
The MD1 Bulldogs improve to 19-1-2 on the season and will next face-off against the No. 10 Calvin University Knights in a two-game GL6 Hockey Conference set next Saturday and Monday. The two rivals will clash in Grand Rapids on Saturday, January 25 at 6:30 PM and then again on Monday, January 27 at the Arrington Ice Arena at 7:30 PM.
