ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College NCAA men's hockey team wrapped up its home series against the University of Dubuque on Saturday afternoon, claiming just one point in the NCHA standings after a hard-fought overtime loss to the Spartans.
The Bulldogs came out strong, scoring three goals in the first period. Frank Tafelski opened the scoring to give Adrian a 1-0 lead. Dubuque quickly responded, but Ryder Nienhuis answered back for the Bulldogs, making it 2-1. Later in the period, David Clarke scored in front of the net to extend the lead to 3-1 by the end of the first. In the second period, Adrian increased its lead to 4-1 when Ian Amsbaugh scored on the power play.
However, Dubuque controlled the third period, scoring three unanswered goals to tie the game and force overtime. Just 33 seconds into the extra frame, the Spartans found the back of the net to secure a 5-4 victory.
Tafelski and Clarke each had multi-point games, adding assists to their goals. Nolan Suggs got the start in goal for the Bulldogs, finishing with 22 saves.
Adrian will now turn its focus to rivalry weekend, hosting St. Norbert College on January 31 at 7:00 PM.
