ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Adrian College men's lacrosse team continued its hot start to the MIAA schedule, grabbing a gutsy 12-7 win over Trine University on the road on Tuesday, improving their conference record to 3-1 with two games remaining in the regular season.
The Bulldogs opened things up on Tuesday, scoring the first two goals of the game thanks to
Jack Messel and
Derek Hassel. Trine answered back just a few moments later to leave things at 2-1 after the first frame.
An action-packed second stanza saw the Bulldogs and Thunder trade a total of nine tallies before halftime, bringing the score to a 6-6 draw with two quarters of play to go.
Brandon Hoerauf scored twice in the second quarter, including one while down a man.
Austin Selvage and
Michael Jonas added the remaining two tallies in the quarter for Adrian.
In quarter three, the Bulldogs carried out in front, out-scoring the Thunder 4-1 to take the 10-7 lead into the final frame as
Riley Edwards, Jonas,
Tyler Ristau, and Hassel deposited goals into the back of the Trine net. As the game entered its final stages, the Bulldogs stood strong defensively, holding off the Thunder from scoring any more, while adding two more to their total to secure a 12-7 victory.
Alec Winegar and Edwards twizzled twine in the final frame to erase the Thunder on their own turf.
Highlighting the offense was Jonas, who added three helpers along with his two markers. Jonas now sits at 98 points on the year and stands atop the NCAA Division III nation in scoring and tied for first in goals, with 60. The Holland native continues his remarkable season, becoming the first Adrian Bulldog to ever tally 60 goals in a season. Additionally, with two games left on the regular season docket, Jonas is bound to set the program record for single season assists as he only needs three more.
Selvage finished right behind Jonas with five points on the evening, ahead of Hassel and Ristau who each closed with three.
Cameron Reed led with four caused turnovers and
Nico Palazzolo wrapped up with eight ground balls. Hassel led the way with eight shot attempts.
Goaltender,
Sam Spangler, joined in on the record breaking festivities on Tuesday as he turned aside 18 shots to become the Adrian College men's lacrosse program leader in single season saves with 208.
The Bulldogs will host Alma College on Friday, April 18 at Docking Stadium in their next contest. Face-off is set to take place at 4:00 PM.
