DE PERE, Wis. – The Adrian College NCAA men's hockey team closed out its road series with St. Norbert College on Saturday night, earning two of a possible three points in the NCHA standings after a 2-2 tie and a shootout victory.
After a scoreless first period, St. Norbert struck first with a power-play goal in the second to take a 1-0 lead. Early in the third period, Bradley Somers answered for Adrian with a power-play goal to even the score at 1-1. Patrick Saini gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 advantage midway through the third with another power-play tally, but just over a minute later, the Green Knights responded on the man advantage to force overtime.
With the score still tied after overtime, the game was decided in a shootout. Somers netted the lone shootout goal, and goaltender Ryan Piros turned aside all St. Norbert attempts to secure the extra point for Adrian.
The Bulldogs finished 2-for-2 on the power play and held a narrow 37-36 edge in shots. Theo Thrun, Jack O'Hanisain, David Clarke, and Ian Amsbaugh each recorded an assist, while Piros made 33 saves in the win.
With the result, Adrian now holds a five-point lead in the NCHA standings with 36 points and has officially clinched a home playoff series for the Harris Cup Playoffs. Aurora University sits second with 31 points, followed by Trine University in third with 30 points, and St. Norbert College in fourth with 29 points.
The Bulldogs return home next weekend for a two-game series against Concordia Wisconsin, beginning Friday, February 6, at 7:00 p.m.
