OLIVET, Mich. – As the calendar flipped to October, the Adrian College women's volleyball team started MIAA play with a match against the Comets of Olivet.
Looking to start conference play off on the right foot, Adrian fell behind early in the first set. An attack error by the Bulldogs, in addition to three straight kills by the Comets, gave Adrian an early deficit.
As Adrian has all season, the Bulldogs fought back as Adrian's offense strung together a 7-2 run that propelled them into the lead at 11-9. Lauren Boehmer earned a kill to give Adrian a 24-22 advantage. An Olivet attack error sealed the Bulldogs' 25-22 first-set victory.
Set two was another battle for the Bulldogs. The set included ties at nine separate points. In a set where neither team was able to gain much of an advantage, Kaiya Denny had two service aces in a row to give Adrian a 15-14 lead.
Down 24-22 and at risk of dropping the second set, Adrian rattled off four straight points. It started with an Avery O'Shaughnessy kill to bring the Bulldogs within one point. Then, a service ace by Chloe Kiser tied things up at 24 apiece. The nail in the coffin was back-to-back attack errors by the Comets. A 26-24 set victory gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead in the match.
The two teams exchanged points with each other to start the third set. Three straight kills courtesy of Virginia Rowan, Lauren Boehmer, and Avery O'Shaughnessy gave the Bulldogs a 12-8 lead. Adrian never looked back, continuing to build on their lead. A 25-16 victory secured the match sweep for Adrian.
This is the program's first sweep over an MIAA opponent since October 5, 2024, against Alma College.
Emma Leinberger's 23 assists put her over the 500 mark for assists in her career.
