ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College women's soccer team enters the MIAA Tournament playing some of its best soccer of the season after overcoming injuries and a difficult start to conference play.
The Bulldogs earned the No. 6 seed and will travel to third-seeded Kalamazoo College for an 11 a.m. first-round match on Saturday. Adrian finished the regular season 6-9-2 overall and 3-5 in the MIAA.
Adrian's path to the postseason was not easy. The Bulldogs opened conference play with five consecutive losses and entered their final three matches knowing they needed three victories to keep their season alive.
The Bulldogs responded with a 4-0 road victory over The University of Olivet before shutting out Saint Mary's College, 2-0, at home. Adrian then completed its postseason push with a 2-0 victory at Alma College to clinch its spot in the MIAA Tournament.
Adrian outscored its opponents 8-0 during the three-match winning streak. The Bulldogs created consistent offensive pressure while the defense recorded three consecutive shutouts.
Captains Bri Aikens and Melanie Perhne provided leadership and stability throughout the season, helping hold the defense together through injuries and lineup changes. Hannah Rose and Ciara Pape also delivered dependable performances along the back line as the Bulldogs became increasingly organized and difficult to break down late in the season.
Delaney Batur provided a strong two-way presence and scored the game-winning goal in the playoff-clinching victory at Alma. Freshman Isla Brown and senior Samantha Guciardo also played important roles in a midfield that continued to improve throughout the year.
Ashley Hughes and Madison Verhaeghe finished the regular season tied for the team lead with three goals apiece. Hughes consistently pressured opposing defenses, while Verhaeghe scored twice during the victory at Olivet. Tiara Ellis provided another late-season boost by scoring against Olivet and Alma, including the insurance goal that helped secure Adrian's tournament berth.
Nora Kinsey, Kate Lawrie, Gracie Jagodzinski, Sophia Trozak and Chasity Rivera also provided valuable minutes as the Bulldogs worked through injuries and lineup adjustments.
Adrian faced additional adversity in goal after an injury to Riley Miller forced the Bulldogs to adjust during the middle of the season. Monica Arndt stepped into the starting role and delivered several strong performances, including a 16-save effort against Calvin University.
Miller later returned to the lineup and helped anchor Adrian's late-season turnaround. The Bulldogs did not allow a goal during their final three regular-season matches as the entire defensive group remained composed through a stretch in which every result carried postseason implications.
After fighting through injuries, close losses and an 0-5 conference start, Adrian has found its stride at the right time. The Bulldogs now have an opportunity to carry that momentum into Saturday's MIAA Tournament matchup at Kalamazoo.
