ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College NCAA men's hockey team hosted Trine University on Friday night to open the final series of the regular season. Entering the contest, the No. 3-ranked Bulldogs sat atop the NCHA standings with a five-point lead and needed just one point to clinch the NCHA Peters Cup. The No. 12-ranked Thunder, who entered the weekend in second place, were held scoreless as Adrian secured all three points with a 4-0 shutout, locking up the Peters Cup and the No. 1 seed.
Patrick Saini opened the scoring in the first period, netting his 18th goal of the season to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Later in the frame, Adrian capitalized on the power play as Jacob Suede found the back of the net to extend the advantage to 2-0 heading into the first intermission.
The Bulldogs continued to build momentum late in the second period when Devyn Orpana added a goal to make it 3-0 entering the third. Suede capped the scoring late in the final period, netting his second goal of the night on a 5-on-3 power play to seal the 4-0 victory.
Amsbaugh led Adrian offensively with two assists on the night, while Ryan Piros was stellar between the pipes, stopping all 24 shots he faced to earn the shutout.
With the win, the Bulldogs secured home-ice advantage for the upcoming Harris Cup Playoffs. Adrian will conclude the regular season on Saturday night with a road matchup against Trine University at 7:00 p.m.
