ADRIAN, Mich. – The NCHA Slaats Cup Playoffs opened Friday night as the Adrian College NCAA women's hockey team hosted No. 8 seed Trine University in a quarterfinal matchup. The No. 1 seeded Bulldogs dominated game one of the two-game series with a 9-0 victory.
Riley Johnson set the tone early, scoring twice in the first period to give Adrian a 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs erupted for five goals in the second period, with Elizabeth Sturgeon, Sophia LaColla, and Courtney Ben each finding the back of the net, while Paige Pomerleau added two goals of her own.
Adrian capped the scoring in the third period as Hannah Markovich netted a goal and Ben scored her second of the night on the power play to seal the 9-0 win.
Johnson finished with a five-point performance, adding three assists to her two goals. Emma Simon recorded three assists, while Markovich and Hunter Reardon each contributed two helpers.
In goal, Kiera Stack made four saves in the start. Erin Judge stopped five shots in relief, and Vanessa Ruban turned aside one shot to complete the shutout.
The Bulldogs will look to complete the quarterfinal sweep against Trine on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at Arrington Ice Arena.
