ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Adrian College men's lacrosse team jumped out to an early advantage, but a dominant run by Hope College proved too much to overcome in a 23-9 loss on Wednesday night at Sweebe Family Athletic Center.
Adrian came out strong in the opening quarter, taking a 2-0 lead behind goals from Trace Tidswell and Austin Selvage, including a man-up conversion. However, Hope responded with three late goals to close the period and take a 3-2 edge.
The second quarter swung the momentum decisively in favor of the visitors, as Hope erupted for eight unanswered goals. Adrian was held scoreless in the frame, allowing Hope to build an 11-2 halftime lead.
Hope continued its offensive surge into the third quarter, extending the margin to 17-3 before Adrian found the net again. Braeden McNamara and Selvage each tallied goals in the period, but the Bulldogs still trailed 17-4 heading into the final quarter.
Adrian showed fight in the fourth, scoring five goals behind a balanced attack. Tidswell completed his hat trick, while McNamara and Selvage each added their third goals of the game. Despite the late push, Hope answered to secure the 23-9 final.
Tidswell, Selvage, and McNamara each recorded three goals to lead Adrian offensively, accounting for all nine Bulldog tallies. Selvage added an assist for a team-high four points.
Defensively, Josiah Karnehm made 13 saves in 45 minutes of action, while Owen Smith added three stops in relief. Adrian converted two man-up opportunities and went 17-of-18 on clear attempts in the contest. Hope outshot Adrian 58-37 and held a 31-23 advantage in ground balls, using sustained offensive pressure to control the game.
Adrian moves to 3-13 overall and 1-5 in conference play, while Hope remains unbeaten at 16-0 (6-0). The Bulldogs will look to regroup as they hit the road Saturday to Albion for the MIAA quarterfinals at 12:00 PM. Â
