ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College men's golf team competed in a two-round, 36-hole match play event against Siena Heights University on Thursday. The Maple City Match Play began with a 2v2 best ball round at Adrian's home course, Tecumseh Golf Club, before concluding with singles match play at Siena Heights' home course, The Hills of Lenawee.
After the teams split the opening best ball session 2-2, the Bulldogs pulled ahead in singles play, winning 4.5-2.5 to secure a 6.5-4.5 overall victory and claim the trophy.
In the 2v2 best ball round, Siena Heights earned a 4&2 victory over Jack Waldo and Simon Foreman. With uneven rosters, Cole Zavadil competed in a singles match and fell 5&3. Adrian responded with a 3&2 win from Jaden Eggers and Mason Gurney, while Michael Shubeck and Carter Klawonn added a 5&4 victory to even the team score at 2-2 after the opening round.
Play then shifted to The Hills of Lenawee for singles competition. Zavadil dropped the opening match 4&2, but the Bulldogs quickly gained momentum. Waldo secured a 3&2 win, and Foreman followed with a 1-up victory. Eggers fell 6&5, but Gurney answered with a 2-up win. Shubeck battled to a tie, finishing all square, before Klawonn clinched the team victory with a 2&1 win in the final match.
Adrian used the Maple City Match Play as a final tune-up ahead of the MIAA Spring Finale, hosted by Kalamazoo College. The two-round event is scheduled for April 29-30 at Hawkshead Golf Course in South Haven, Michigan.
