The Adrian ACHA hockey team dropped a 5-4 decision on Friday night to Oakland in a shootout. It was the first shootout of the season for the Bulldogs who were outscored 2-1 in the shootout. Jared Semple scored in the shootout for Adrian but Tony Aukskalnis hit the pipe and Alex Norman had the tying goal stopped by goaltender Collin Chase.
Adrian had three two-goal deficits in the contest and managed to comeback with three goals in the third period. AC was down 2-0 after the first period as Kyle McMahon and Joe Guenther each scored in the first for the Grizzlies.
Aukskalnis cut the lead in half at 5:46 in the second period with assists from Trevor Markovich and Tim Carlson on the power play. Jesse Worell gave Oakland a 3-1 lead at 8:38 of the second on a power play with assists from John Parrish and McMahon.
Adrian got on the board first in the third period on the man advantage as Justen Mitchell scored from the point with an assist from Dominic Scala to make the score 3-2 at 3:18. Oakland scored just 15 seconds later as Guenther got his second goal of the night from Parrish and Brian Jacobs.
Zach Fowler scored at 10:21 at even strength with an assist from James Scullion to cut the lead to 4-3. Scullion continued a good period for him with the game-tying goal at 12:49 with an assist from Norman on the power play. Adrian finished the game 2-for-11 on the power play while Oakland was 1-for-8.
Adrian served 16 penalty minutes and Oakland had 22 penalty minutes. Anthony Wolak made 34 saves in net for the Bulldogs. He had 13 saves in the third and three more in the five-minute overtime before the shootout. Oakland registered a 38-20 advantage in shots on goal. Adrian is now 6-7 on the season and will travel to Oakland to complete the weekend series tomorrow for a 8:40 p.m. faceoff.
