ADRIAN, Mich. -
The Adrian College men's lacrosse team dropped a tough decision in their home-opener against the Washington & Jefferson College Presidents on Saturday afternoon.
The first period saw both teams trade goals to open up the contest. The Presidents scored first on an extra-man attack 2:09 into the opening frame. The Bulldogs did not need much time to find the scoreboard and knot the game at 1-1 as Ryan Knautz scored his ninth goal of the season just 35 seconds later. After a second Washington & Jefferson goal, Matt Gregson tied the game at 2-2 on the extra-man opportunity. The Presidents, however, notched another goal in the final three minutes of the quarter to take the 3-2 advantage at the first break.
Knautz got the Bulldog offense started again in the second quarter, netting his team-leading 10th goal of the season to even the score again, this time at 3-3. The Presidents then had an offensive outburst as they scored four unanswered goals in 4:11 of game time to take a 7-3 lead. Nolan Gillespie tried to get the Bulldogs rolling again by scoring his second goal of the season with six minutes remaining before the half. The Presidents halted any kind of momentum the Bulldogs hoped to gain by netting two more goals with 4:36 and 2:50 before the end of the second to take a 9-4 lead. On the ensuing Bulldog possession, Josh Maluta scored his first goal of the day to cut the lead to four goals and send the game to 9-5 at the half.
The third period saw the two teams trade goals again with the Presidents scoring three times and the Bulldogs adding two more goals. Maluta notched his second goal of the contest while Matt Gregson found the back of the net as well to pace the Bulldogs as Adrian trailed at the end of the third quarter by a 12-7 margin.
The Presidents outscored the Bulldogs in the fourth by a 4-to-1 margin to take the 15-8 win as Maluta scored his third goal of the game with 6:20 left.
Nick DeGroot and Eric Lindstrom split time in goal while DeGroot suffered the loss between the pipes.
The Bulldogs (1-2) will take to the road next Saturday as they will face Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
