Box Score
ADRIAN, Mich. -
On a very windy day at the Adrian College softball field, Andrea Vangoss needed little offensive support on the mound to help deliver a win for the Bulldogs against cross-town rival Siena Heights.
The Saints would put together their only offensive threat of the day in the top of the first inning. After lead-off hitter Kina Williams walked, a two-out single that dropped into left field by Liz Harrison would allow Williams to score for the Saints' only run of the day on their lone hit.
The Bulldogs took little time to wipe away the deficit as they tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the opening inning. Krissy Sheets walked to lead-off the Adrian half of the inning. Three batters later, Sheets scored from second on a pop-up that got away from the Saints' pitcher in the strong wind blowing in from right field.
Carmen Batway hit a one-out single up the middle in the bottom of the third inning and then scored when Holly Lowe doubled down the left field line to put the Bulldogs up for good in the game.
The Adrian offense struck for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game away. Carly Toth started off the inning with a strong hit that the third baseman was unable to play for a lead-off single in the frame. Toth would score two batters later when Kristin Toney singled through the right side of the infield. Katie Adams followed up by notching a bunt single, which would eventually score Toney when the Saints threw the ball around the infield trying to get Bulldog runners out advancing on the play. Sheets safely reached first for the fourth time in the game on a fielder's choice that would allow Adams to score. Sheets then plated the Bulldogs' final run of the game when Holly Lowe picked up her third hit of the game on a single through the right side of the Saints' defense.
Andrea Vangoss had all the help that she needed while throwing a solid game for the Bulldogs. The senior pitcher went seven complete innings, surrendering just one run on one hit while striking out seven in the Bulldogs' first win over the Saints since at least 2004.
The Bulldogs will take a little bit of a break this weekend before having a full week of games next week. The Adrian College softball team (14-12, 5-3 MIAA) will face conference foe Hope College on Monday, April 14 at the Adrian College softball field. Game one is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
