Game Two Box Score
ADRIAN, Mich. -
The defending MIAA champions from Alma College were prepared to defend their title on Wednesday as they took 4-1 and 5-1 wins from Adrian College in the Bulldogs' conference opening doubleheader.
The Scots grabbed an early 2-0 lead after the first half-inning on an Amy Guadard two run home run over the center field fence. In the second inning, the Scots stretched their lead to 3-0 on an unearned run scored by Sarah Johnson. With one strong swing in the bottom of the second, Meghan Stevens put the Bulldogs right back into the game as she hammered a solo homer to left center field to cut the lead to 3-1.
The Bulldog offense, however, struggled to build momentum off of the solo shot by Stevens as the next 11 straight batters were retired in order by the Alma defense. The Scots added their fourth run of the game in the top of the fourth inning to push their lead back to three runs, which is how the game would end.
Despite surrendering just three hits over the course of the game, Andrea Vangoss suffered the tough loss on the mound in the 4-1 contest while going the distance.
In the second game of the doubleheader, it would once again be the Scots who would score first. Missy Morcom and Amy Guadard both scored first inning runs again for the Scots to give them another 2-0 lead after one inning of play. For the second straight game, the Scots made the game 3-0 after two innings on a two out double down the left field line.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard in the top of the third when Katie Adams scored on a Holly Lowe sacrifice fly down the left field line to cut the Alma lead to 3-1. In the bottom half of the inning, the Scots took momentum back from the Bulldogs by scoring their fourth run of the game.
Over the next three innings, however, the Bulldogs were unable to safely advance a runner to third and could not mount a comeback while the Scots added their fifth run in the bottom of the fifth inning to take game two by a final 5-1 score.
Amanda Hall took the loss on the mound in game two for the Bulldogs, surrendering three runs on five hits over two innings of work. Kelly Tomasek came on in relief in the bottom of the third inning to toss four complete innings.
The Bulldogs (6-11, 0-2 MIAA) will next face MIAA rival Albion College on Friday, April 4 in a rescheduled contest from last weekend. The conference twinbill will take place at Albion College with the first game being scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
