The saying that some sports are a game of inches can be translated into the end of the season for the Adrian softball team. It seems like by just an inch or two that the team will not make the MIAA Tournament despite tying for fourth place in the conference standings with Hope at 9-7. The tournament takes just four teams and even though Hope and Adrian split their doubleheader earlier this season, the tiebreaker goes to the Flying Dutch because they scored more total runs in the two games (10-2). The Bulldogs needed a sweep at Tri-State but fell 9-1 in six innings in game one before turning it on for an 8-0 win in five innings in game two.
Elise English had the Bulldogs' number in game one as she struck out 10 with no walk in a complete game win (8-2). Andrea Vangoss (11-9) allowed eight earned runs while walking three and striking out three in her final game as a Bulldog in the circle. Vangoss is the lone senior on this year's squad.
Adrian managed to collect six hits as freshman Holly Lowe went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Kristin Toney and Katie Adams at the bottom of the order both collected a hit and Adams scored the lone run for the Bulldogs.
AC scored once in the first and added five runs in the second to distance themselves from the Thunder in game two. Lowe singled home Krissy Sheets who reached on a double to give Adrian a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs scored their five runs in the second with two outs. Carmen Batway singled home Ashlee Hill to give Adrian a 2-0 lead. Lowe then delivered a dagger as she laced a double to center which cleared the bases for a 5-0 lead. The final run in the second came off an error by first baseman Brittney Stensland off the bat of Jenna Kloster which allowed Lowe to score.
The Bulldogs added their final two runs in the fourth. Lowe tripled to center which scored Batway from second and then an error by shortstop Vicki Hayes on the same play allowed Lowe to score for an 8-0 lead. Kelly Tomasek (9-4) pitched a three-hit shutout in five innings with 10 strikeouts and one walk. Adrian concludes the 2008 season with an overall record of 21-17.
Notes: Holly Lowe led the team with a .417 batting average this season as a freshman...She started all 38 games and had 16 doubles, two triples, three homers and a team-leading 32 RBI.
