Final Stats
ADRIAN, Mich. -
The Adrian College softball team won both games of a doubleheader against Defiance College on Wednesday night to improve to 17-1 overall this season. Adrian held on to a one run lead to win game one 3-2, and then shut out DC 2-0 in game two.
Game one got off to a slow start. Neither team was able to generate a run until the sixth inning. The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first with a three run inning in the bottom of the sixth.
Katrina Wotten started the sixth inning with a single through the right side of the infield. Katie Adams moved Wotten to second with a sacrafice bunt down the third base line. Krissy Sheets was unable to move the runner as she popped up to second base. The turning point of the game came on the next play as Rachel Batman reached base on a throwing error by the second baseman with two outs. Wotten came around to score on the play and the inning continued due to the error.
Holly Lowe singled through the left side of the infield to keep the inning alive. The hit moved Batman into scoring position. Meghan Stevens increased the Bulldog lead with an RBI single. Batman scored on a play at the plate, and Lowe moved on to third base. Jenna Kloster got involved in the offense with an RBI single to right field. Lowe scored the third run of the inning for AC.
Defiance made a comeback in the top of the seventh inning. Kayla Crager got on base with a single up the middle of the field, and Amanda Auzins closed the gap to 3-2 by hitting a home run to left field. Kelly Eberhardt buckled down and retired the next three batters to earn the win for Adrian.
Eberhardt threw a complete game to earn her eighth win of the year. She allowed six hits and struck out three batters.
Kelly Tomasek led Adrian to victory in game two. Tomasek threw a complete game three-hitter against the Yellow Jackets. The sophmore also struck out nine batters giving her a team-high 62 strikeouts this season.
Adrian grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first inning in game two. Batman got things going with a single up the middle of the field. Lowe followed Batman in the lineup with a single to left field. Stevens once again delivered a clutch hit for the Bulldogs with another RBI single allowing Batman to score.
Kristin Toney gave Adrian an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning by hitting a solo homerun to left field. Toney now has two homeruns in 2009.
Adrian made a schedule change and will now return to action on Friday, March 27th with a doubleheader against Concordia University.
