April 1, 2009

Box Score

ALMA, Mich. - The Adrian College softball team split a doubleheader against Alma College on Wednesday night. The Scots were able to defeat Adrian 7-4 in game one, but AC came back strong to win game two 8-0 in just six innings.

Holly Lowe and Krissy Sheets accounted for five of the eight hits for Adrian in game one. Lowe finished the game with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, while Sheets hit 2-for-3 and also scored two runs for the Bulldogs.

Back-to-back home runs gave Alma the lead during game one. The Bulldogs responded by scoring three runs in the top of the third inning with a home run of their own from Meghan Stevens.

AC could not hang onto the lead as Alma took control of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Scots scored five runs off four hits to take a 7-3 lead. Sheets led off the seventh inning with a solo home run, but the hit was not enough to spark a comeback as the Scots handed Adrian their second loss of the season.

Kelly Eberhardt got the start on the mound for the Bulldogs. She allowed seven earned runs off of seven hits and was replaced by Sarah Almack in the fourth inning.

Lowe continued to see the ball well in game two as she went 3-for-3 to lead the Bulldogs to victory. Kristin Toney also made an impact by going 3-for-3 at the plate. The Bulldog offense scored eight runs off 12 hits, while Kelly Tomasek shut down the Scots by throwing a one hit shutout.

Tomasek improved to 13-0 on the mound for the Bulldogs. The sophomore stuck out eight batters, and did not allow a hit after the second inning.

Toney hit an RBI double to left field to give Adrian the lead in the second inning. Katie Adams followed Toney in the lineup by hitting an RBI single to right field to increase the AC lead to 2-0. The final run of the inning came when Toney scored off a sacrifice fly from Sheets.

Lowe pushed the lead to 4-0 when she hit a solo home run to lead off the fifth inning, but the game was decided in the sixth inning when Adrian scored four runs off five hits to defeat the Scots 8-0. Adrian now holds a 22-2 record after the split with Alma. The team will return to action this weekend with a doubleheader against Olivet on April 4th. Game one will begin at 1:00 p.m.
