The Adrian College softball team improved to 29-3 overall by picking up two wins against Calvin College on Wednesday afternoon. Game one was close, but the Bulldogs held on to win 3-2. Adrian defeated the Knights 11-3 in game two. Katrina Wotten went 3-for-4 in game two with a home run and a double.
Adrian took a 1-0 lead in game one in the top of the third inning. Krissy Sheets was walked to reach first base. Sarah Hall advanced the runner with a double to right centerfield. Holly Lowe came up and delivered an RBI single through the left side of the infield that allowed Sheets to score the first run of the game.
The Bulldogs were able to expand thier lead to 3-0 by scoring two more runs in the top of the fifth. Katie Adams led off the inning with a single to left centerfield. Sheets moved Adams to second base with a sacrifice bunt. The Knights walked Hall, and then the Bulldogs loaded the bases after Lowe reached base on a single. Jenna Kloster walked to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. She came up with a clutch hit, as her single up the middle scored both Adams and Hall to cushion the lead.
Calvin made a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Knights recorded back-to-back doubles and went on to score two runs, but Kelly Tomasek buckled down and picked up her 18th win of the season by ending the game with a strikeout.
Tomasek is having a dream season. The sophomore is a perfect 18-0 in 2009. She limited the Knights to four hits as she struck out ten batters, and did not allow a walk.
The Bulldogs won game two 11-3 in just six innings due to the eight-run rule. Calvin scored three runs through the first three innings, but Kelly Eberhardt shut down the Knight offense for the remainder of the game. Eberhardt improved to 9-2 on the season and limited Calvin to four hits while striking out six.
The Bulldogs had plenty of offense in game two. AC scored 11 runs off 14 hits, and still ended the game with 12 runners left on base.
Wotten was on fire with a 3-for-4 effort. The freshman scored three runs and also had an RBI. Adams, Meghan Stevens, Lowe and Hall each had two hits for Adrian. Lowe had a game-high three RBI's, and Stevens added two.
